Low Oxalate Diets

General Information:

A low oxalate diet means eating foods that to not have much oxalate. Oxalates are chemicals found in plant foods but not in animal foods. Some people are more likely to form kidney stones if they eat foods high in oxalates. You may need to follow a low oxalate diet if you have kidney stones or short bowel syndrome. If you do not absorb fat well, you may also need to use this diet.

Instructions:

Drink 1 cup (8 ounces) of water or other liquids every hour during the day. If you awaken during the night drink another cup of liquid. One cup of liquid is also the same as a small milk carton. Drink only 1 cup of coffee a day, if you drink coffee. Limit your cola drinks to 1 can a day. Follow your Doctor’s advice when drinking alcohol. If you take vitamin C, do not take more than 1000 mg (1 gram) each day. Do not eat the foods on the high oxalate food list. The foods on the moderate oxalate list may be eaten 3 to 5 times each week. You may eat foods on the low oxalate list as often as you like.
