1. Treatment response with combination therapy using interferon and ribavirin is better than interferon alone (monotherapy)
2. Genotype influences treatment decision and response to therapy
3. Sustained virologic response (SVR i.e. the absence of detectable HCV RNA 24 weeks after the end of treatment) is the best indicator of effective therapy and correlates with reduction in hepatic fibrosis.
4. Early viral response (EVR), defined as a decrease in HCV RNA level during the first 12 -24 weeks of treatrment, is predictive of SVR. Those who fail to achieve EVR have only a small chance of achieving SVR if treatment is continued fo the full 48 weeks.
5. Pegylated interferon in combination with Ribavirin is the preferred treatment option and gives the best chances of sustained virologic response.
